Irving Belateche – “Next Big Thing” Interview
Before I answer your questions, I’d like to thank Christiana Miller for asking me to participate in the “The Next Big Thing.” For those of you who haven’t read Christiana’s books, take a look. They’re entertaining, thought provoking, and damn good yarns!
Author : Irving Belateche
Title of Book: H2O
Tell us about your book in one sentence?
Roy Walker is curious. But in a world where knowledge has disappeared, curiosity will get you killed.
What’s the genre of your book?
Science Fiction, Thriller
How long did it take you to write the first draft?
It took me three months to write the first draft, and another nine months of rewriting to finish. I believe in the power of rewriting!
What was your inspiration for the book?
I love “conspiracy” based Science Fiction, everything from the book “Ender’s Game” (which is mentioned in “H2O”) to the film “The Matrix.” So it was only a matter of time before I wrote one myself, either as a screenplay or a novel.
The spark came when I read an article on the privatizing of water. Water, which is a public resource, is fast becoming a private resource.
But no one reads a novel because of ideas, they read it because of characters, and I discovered my main character when I met a young man who’d told me how he’d been ostracized and tormented as a kid because he was smart. But what made his story unique was that he was actually encouraged to stay “dumb” by his friends and family.
Well, he didn’t stay dumb, he learned everything he could and put up with being branded an outsider.
Anyway, I thought what if this man’s quest for knowledge, against all odds, saved the world.
Is there anything else about your book that might peak a reader’s interest?
H2O was the number one downloaded Science Fiction book on Amazon during the third week of December. I’m proud to say that more than a few people emailed me to ask about a sequel and compared it to Hugh Howey’s “Wool.”
